What is Mirena?
Mirena, the hormonal intrauterine system (IUS) is an effective, long-term, reversible contraceptive method. It is also used to treat heavy periods. This is a small T-shaped plastic that is inserted under a physician trained in the uterus. Mirena slowly releases the hormone substance, Levonorgestrel. The system remains effective for five years but can be removed at any time.
Mirena works in several ways: * That thickens the cervical mucus, thus helping to stop sperm reaching the egg * It inhibits the normal function of sperm into the uterus and fallopian ovary * Makes the lining of the womb thin, making periods lighter and shorter.
It is a very reliable method of contraception. Studies show that if 1000 women used the system for a year, no more than two may become pregnant.
I've been using Mirena for a year now and I would try for a baby. Once removed I will be able to get pregnant right away? Once Mirena is removed fertility returns to normal.
¿I can continue to use the diaphragm as a contraceptive after my baby is born?
